Tether a HTC Desire with Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) via USB

May 21, 2010

You’re as amazed as I’m how short this article is as I’m. I looked through the Internet before I tried it myself and did a look at articles like this.  Almost all wrote how complicated that is (e.g. a HTC Software for Windows that works or not) or that you need a software like PDAnet. Thats absolutely not true for the HTC Desire with an Ubuntu 10.04 notebook/netbook. I just connected both via the shipped USB cable and selected on the Desire to share the Internet connection. And guess what happend the Network Manager told me that I’m connected to the network. I couldn’t believe it so I flipped to my shell windows and did a ping. And yes, I was connected.  I really don’t understand the problem now the people have. Wrong OS on the notebook? 😉

Some guys in the Linux/Open Source world talked with each other and made it just works out of the box – no special applications or drivers – it just worked. Big THX guys!!! I really love my Ubuntu and Android!

  1. Wow.

Incredible. I have Linux Mint on my Laptop (Ubuntu 10.04) and android 2.1.

It took me 15 seconds to get internet working. I am thrilled and flabbergasted.

  2. I am flabbergasted.

LInux Mint Gloria (Ubuntu 10.04) and android 2.1 and HTC Desire work perfectly tethered.

It only took me 15 seconds.

  3. Same here. VERY easy to tether via USB but cables are so last century! More challenging to tether by blue tooth as my Nokia Navigator was!

  5. Was working fine for me until 2.2 upgrade, now it no longer works on Ubuntu or Windows.

Anyone else seeing this or have a solution? Tried reinstalling the HTC sync for Windows XP but no joy, as you said always worked out of the box for Ubuntu but no longer doing so.

    Cheers,
    Cian

  6. Hm, need to check it after I did the upgrade. Is the WIFI tethering working which should be shipped with the 2.2 upgrade?

  7. Hello,
I tried it now with my ubuntu + desire with android2.2, and it works, just a little different way:
    – connect Your phone to the pc with usb
    – then in the phone: settings-wireless and networks, and there is a checkbox USB tethering. tick it and voila, You are online 🙂

    Additional info:
this checkbox is enabled only if the phone is connected via usb

    Best,
    Andor

  9. connect the cable, select ‘internet sharing’ on the phone, and do a ping. but be nice how you use it, or uscell will come get you.

  10. I have a Japanese (Softbank) Desire with Froyo, and I see no “USB tethering” or “internet sharing” checkbox. Is it possible that it has been disabled by Softbank, or is there something else I must do?

  13. Holy crap. I remember the agony I went through to get my 3G card to work on Ubuntu and I was settling into a long evening of hair pulling and swearing to get my Wildfire to work. Fired up as soon as I checked the sharing box. Wow. Thanks for this.

  16. Cool!

I’d just note that while selecting the network to be shared, You have to select ‘Windows’ as the networking type. I expected ‘Mac OS’ but that doesn’t work.
